Brilliant marketing or sacrilege?

Posted on 10:19 AM, under

So Burger King just launched a new facebook app that will reward you with a free whopper if you "sacrifice" or delete ten of your facebook friends.  You can check out the details here. Was wondering what you guys thought.  I think it's a brilliant idea as far as testing loyalty for a brand, but obviously as a born and raised church boy, my radar goes up when I hear words like sacrifice. What are your thoughts?  Harmless fun or has BK gone too far?

PS: If you want to download the app and delete me as a friend from facebook, I'm cool with that.  I promise I won't take it personally.  We all need free Whoppers.  We're in a recession don't you know.

UPDATE:  Facebook has shut this campaign down.  Get the whole story here.

My problem is since I was pregant with Eric (who by the way is now 21) I could not eat Whoopers as the smell made me very ill. So, I choose friends over a free Whooper. Friends last a lot longer and Whooper are gone in a couple of bites.

I would definitely say brilliant marketing. I have one question though, can you simply "re-friend" the people who you who you sacrifice?

I find it quite interesting advertising! It makes you laugh, and think "why not?" WAY better than the creepy plastic king in their ads. If you notice it has has disabled since over 233,906 friends were sacrificed. (that is what your link says).
